Of special note, I actually got sub-1 in Sprint on Tetris a couple weeks back.

Damn, nice! Congrats! Hitting new milestones in Tetris always feels amazing. I kinda wish I still cared about guideline stuff tho, because last I knew I was less than half a second off sub 50s myself on Tetr.io, but alas, TGM has captured my heart and I'm simply not fast enough, in brain or hands, to be GM worthy in the sequels.

When you mentioned it in the "What games have you been playing?" thread, I know I gave it a look and was very interested, but man I ain't had time in life to check things out. I think I'm gonna check this out now. The big mode demonstration it shows on it's main page has me very intrigued lol.

If you're the domain admin, you can get a free https cert through Let's Encrypt, and they have an auto updater script for your cert and everything you can use. It's great.

I decided screw it, I'm switching to the Christmas theme. I'm usually the "It's not Christmas season until at least after Thanksgiving but it shouldn't be December" person but I wanted a change of scenery so I decided to just switch to it now :P

I just happened to notice, but we reached 304 members! Site certainly hasn't been gaining new members as fast as it was a couple months ago, but it's nice to know it's still gaining. We ain't dying out that soon!

It's been nice having an active forum to keep up with (even if I haven't been posting as much recently, life is a bitch like that), and I finally bothered to figure out and understand how CSS works to make a post layout (even if it's kinda simple and basic), a thing I've tried to do before but somehow always ended up confused and distracted and not getting anywhere, which I'm very happy about.

This site is awesome, I hope to see it around for a long time to come.

Nintendo's goal here is pretty obvious. They are sending a message to prospective emulator developers:

Nintendo said:
Do NOT emulate our new console, or we will have your fucking ass served deep fried on a plate of gold!!

And as much as I hate it, it makes sense. They really did lose a lot of sales on the Switch and it's games from people pirating games for Yuzu. I'm not a corporate suck-ass, but honestly I can't help but think trying to emulate a current gen console, before it's even in it's senior years is just a bad fucking idea.

ModernVintageGamer made a video discussing his thoughts on this and I honestly agree with his conclusion that Switch emulation is going to stagnate because of this, even though the source code still exists out there. It sucks to see, but I guess people will just have to be smarter next time.

That was another thing I was kinda wondering about: In terms of growth, I only know of the Discord. I'm kinda wondering if it'd be a good idea to have a Xitter or Bluesky account for the main site if we're here to draw in people, similar to how other sites do it.

If it exists, I'm not aware of it.
I don't think anything else does exist. I'm not a fan of most social media, with Discord being my biggest exception to the rule, so it really wouldn't matter to me much either way TBH. I only really found this site myself because someone linked a Twitter post in a Discord server I'm in about a different ROM hacking site (romhacking.org I think it was?), and found it basically just linked RHDN's database to either RHDN or neoROMhacking.net to download, and I got curious about that second one so I checked it out and found a wild man starting a new Acmlmboard in 2024! I couldn't believe it! I guess in a round about way Twitter is how I got here, but it's only because the post got put in a Discord community I'm in that I ever saw it at all.

I find that, what web services people do or don't count as social media can be flimsy. I didn't use to consider Discord social media, but then I also wasn't against social media (unless it was like, Facebook, and anyone and everyone I knew IRL would see my posts and stuff. I never got why you'd want that, I go to the internet for interests and communal connection I can't find IRL, so it'd feel pointless to just message the people I talk to IRL anyways). I've seen people say Tumblr isn't social media, because it doesn't have an algorithm. I've seen people argue that forums are social media, because it's a website where you socialize with people and post images and stuff.

In my senior year of high school, I started getting big on browsing Reddit, and I was a heavy Reddit scroller for a good few years, and I ended up gaining bad habits because of it. Namely, I started pulling out my phone and browsing Reddit for a while any time I climbed in bed to sleep, which eventually became so problematic that on one night when I was unemployed, I got into bed when I was really tired, pulled out my phone and scrolled Reddit for another 5 or 6 hours, and then just got back out without actually sleeping at all. I did end up getting back in bed and actually passing out a few hours later, but I still decided that Reddit had become a problem for me so I just deleted the app off my phone and never re-installed it. It was a step in the right direction, but it never fixed my underlying bad habits I had gained. The next night I just ended up pulling out my phone again immediately after climbing into bed again, but with no Reddit to scroll, I found myself starting at a new tab for like 3 minutes with no idea what to look at before deciding to open up FiMFiction, and I just ended up replacing my bad Reddit scrolling with reading My Little Pony fanfiction instead (which helped for a while. Hard to understand the words your reading if you're too tired to retain them for more than 2 seconds, so I feel asleep much sooner than I did with Reddit).

That was like, 3 years ago now, and I still haven't curbed my "phone in bed" habit, and have come to despise the way most social media is designed to waste as much of your time as possible. Now I just stick to whatever has a good balance of "respects my time and attention span" (so I'm not stuck on it for hours and hours, and I get an "exit point" eventually), and "provides real social connection" (so I'm actually making friends and engaging communities, not just mindlessly scrolling a fuck ton of reposts without actually interacting). Discord is one of the best value'd social media out there in that way.

I didn't know SRB2K had a "sequel". I only played SRB2K once or twice but it was neat enough. I'll have to give the next one a shot sometime.

I have some of those bad habits, myself. In fact, I've had them since my high school days. That's 20 years of having questionable sleeping habits. I'm trying to curb back on sleeping too late, but sometimes I find myself going to sleep at 8-9am on some days anyways.

Least I'm taking it a little more seriously these days than not taking it seriously at all.

But yeah, I'm of the opinion that Twitter was a mistake. Before Twitter, I was also of the opinion that Tumblr was a mistake. The community those two have cultivated have left me nostalgic for the good ol' messageboard days...
NGL, I gave up trying to sleep at "reasonable times" and just embraced it. If I'm gonna sleep at 4-6 in the morning, then I'll just work night shift (well, when I can. I'm sadly stuck on day shift right now and my sleep is suffering for it because I just don't have the means to get to work and home on night shift times).

Pretty awesome!

I've kinda had to step away for a bit since college picked back up and going through some personal crap currently; hoping to get back to working on stuff soon though
Personal crap getting the way of personal projects is always the worst. Good luck with college, and I hope for the best in whatever you're going through!

Honestly v21 looks fucking awesome, and I agree the white border of v22 is a little too much noise.

You might want to dig through what themes do and don't have logos of their own. I'm currently on the Christmas theme, and it has it's own xmas themed version of Almcmboard's "live the fun posting experience" logo, so I had to preview the Standard theme to see the new logo.

I made a discord icon and 88x31 button using a modified version of the logo (to improve readability when massively scaled down) and plopped a recolored MegaMan X background behind it

OOOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!! That smaller one would make a nice button for embedding on websites and shit. I'll defs be keeping that handy for linking to my ROM hack!

Decided last night on a whim that I wanted to watch Dragon Ball Z, and actually finish it this time, unlike when I was a teen seeing Z Kai airing on Nicktoons and missed random episodes and never seemed to catch anything after the Cell saga. Looked into it a bit, and figured out that apparently that's because at around that time, Z Kai just suddenly ends at the Cell saga, and they didn't finish Kai out to the end of Z until a few years later.

I'm still watching the Kai version, because honestly I'm not super interested in watching the filler, and I found a bunch of reddit comments suggesting it over the old DBZ for new viewers. I think I found a version that's supposed to be as uncensored as possible, but it still seems censored in places so I can't quite tell. Oh well, I'm enjoying watching it anyways.

I just pop in once in a while. :)

You say that, yet you're the second most frequent poster to the boards right now! A clear contradiction of the evidence!

I'm just kidding. I have to agree, I just like to post when I have the time :P

Nintendo's strategy is to intimidate developers who actually have the time and knowledge to work on something like this, rather than go after every single fork. If any Switch emulator gains traction again and people coalesce around it, Nintendo will do the same thing. And it's not just Nintendo; Nicalis DMCA-struck a Cave Story decompilation project and it was more or less abandoned following this, despite source code being reuploaded.

It's just a clever form of brain-drain on the open source community. Companies are starting to catch on to the fact that they don't need to take it to the courts in order to shut down these projects. Even if it went to the courts, people tend to fold instantly due to legal costs and risk of astronomical copyright fines.
There was a Cave Story decomp being worked on? Man, that would have been awesome. It sucks only being able to play that game at it's proper speed on an old freeware game stuck on Windows.

But you're right. DMCA striking anything you think will hurt your profits is just really fucking OP. Whoever is currently heading a project will probably just abandon ship immediately because fucking no one has the money to go fight it in court, much less the time and ambition, and even if you won, would you still want to continue working on it after all that? Sounds fucking exhausting.

Posted by Hiryuu
It's a setback for sure but there is proven resilience with these things. I've seen it over a quarter century now and people will do their very best to take on these company juggernauts to their dying breath.
Those who can endure and remain dedicated to a project even as this kind of shit flies I admire, but rarely do I see it happen. Only other example I'm aware of is some TGM related projects, and even then they never got DMCA'd, so much as Mihara got real mad when he found them, so the community just hide it away from public view and made it all hush hush, so now you just have to be in the know that it exists, and have the right connections to know who to ask. While I totally get the strategy, and it's easily one of the most effective methods to avoid trouble, I just can't help but feel that this approach just misses the mark sometimes.

Let me guess: You tried to make it work out of the box and think you need to get a torrent somewhere for 'additional content'?

Look up FC2 JSON pack for Fightcade. It will do the rest for about 99% of the games on there. Those update accordingly over time so you might want to check back on them every few months.
Uh, do we have rules here on the boards about not linking to or encouraging pirated materials? Something like FC2 is inevitability going to lead to piracy anyways ("Ah yes, let me just manually dump the ROMs of my own Third Strike cabnit, so I can stay legally legit!"), but it was my understanding putting ROM links in a json was primarily about putting the need to obtain ROMs on the user to keep FC from being liable, and said json is kept at least a bit hush hush? That is to say, I don't think putting that in the open on this forum is the best look (but TBH I don't care lol, I just assumed NeoRHDN would take a "No Piracy Please" rule / stance for CYA purposes).

MOD NOTE: Originally contained a link to "FC2 JSON pack"

I'm not logged in on my phone, so I wasn't able to edit it until now, but NinCollin has gotten it for me by now :P

At any rate, I'm glad we can agree that discussing is fine, but linking is a no no.

...so much as Mihara got real mad when he found them...
And now, twenty years later, they're doing their best to publicize TGM4 after stopping production of the old version of it with the thinly veiled threat of never completing the game if we continued to do what we were.

Nah, Heboris and the like weren't going anywhere. Meanwhile, the games themselves have gotten way better with or without ARIKA's help.
Emulation and clones certainly helped TGM's popularity outside of Japan. I wouldn't have gotten into it if I hadn't downloaded a ROM of it and played it in MAME (well, I played the PSX conversion more than actually playing in MAME, but you get the idea). After all, I ain't paying hundreds to thousands of dollars to buy all the arcade gear I'd need to play it legit, including the arcade board of TGM itself, if I haven't had a chance to play it. There certainly aren't arcades near me, much less ones with a TGM cab (Dave & Busters is the best I get, and that's not really an arcade to me, certainly doesn't have TGM). I imagine that story is similar for basically everyone who's played the game outside of Japan before it's Arcade Archives release, and while I actually really like the AATGM releases (convenient, better latency than I usually get with default MAME on my desktop), they probably never would have thought that release worth it if it wasn't for piracy helping keep it available. It just feels evil for demonizing the community for doing what's worked when they wouldn't have even that much otherwise.
