I just happened to notice, but we reached 304 members! Site certainly hasn't been gaining new members as fast as it was a couple months ago, but it's nice to know it's still gaining. We ain't dying out that soon!

It's been nice having an active forum to keep up with (even if I haven't been posting as much recently, life is a bitch like that), and I finally bothered to figure out and understand how CSS works to make a post layout (even if it's kinda simple and basic), a thing I've tried to do before but somehow always ended up confused and distracted and not getting anywhere, which I'm very happy about.

This site is awesome, I hope to see it around for a long time to come.

That was another thing I was kinda wondering about: In terms of growth, I only know of the Discord. I'm kinda wondering if it'd be a good idea to have a Xitter or Bluesky account for the main site if we're here to draw in people, similar to how other sites do it.

If it exists, I'm not aware of it.

I don't think anything else does exist. I'm not a fan of most social media, with Discord being my biggest exception to the rule, so it really wouldn't matter to me much either way TBH. I only really found this site myself because someone linked a Twitter post in a Discord server I'm in about a different ROM hacking site (romhacking.org I think it was?), and found it basically just linked RHDN's database to either RHDN or neoROMhacking.net to download, and I got curious about that second one so I checked it out and found a wild man starting a new Acmlmboard in 2024! I couldn't believe it! I guess in a round about way Twitter is how I got here, but it's only because the post got put in a Discord community I'm in that I ever saw it at all.

I'm just hoping this site is here to stick. I do enjoy having an old-school forum to go to in order to spend my free time. It really takes me back to the ezboard days.

...ezboard? Man, I'm old.

I've been very much against social media since the very start, TBH. The only reason I use Discord is because I view Discord as a straight up replacement for Skype. Twitter, I know for sure, I cannot stand. I try to avoid interaction on it, if it can be avoided.

I find that, what web services people do or don't count as social media can be flimsy. I didn't use to consider Discord social media, but then I also wasn't against social media (unless it was like, Facebook, and anyone and everyone I knew IRL would see my posts and stuff. I never got why you'd want that, I go to the internet for interests and communal connection I can't find IRL, so it'd feel pointless to just message the people I talk to IRL anyways). I've seen people say Tumblr isn't social media, because it doesn't have an algorithm. I've seen people argue that forums are social media, because it's a website where you socialize with people and post images and stuff.

In my senior year of high school, I started getting big on browsing Reddit, and I was a heavy Reddit scroller for a good few years, and I ended up gaining bad habits because of it. Namely, I started pulling out my phone and browsing Reddit for a while any time I climbed in bed to sleep, which eventually became so problematic that on one night when I was unemployed, I got into bed when I was really tired, pulled out my phone and scrolled Reddit for another 5 or 6 hours, and then just got back out without actually sleeping at all. I did end up getting back in bed and actually passing out a few hours later, but I still decided that Reddit had become a problem for me so I just deleted the app off my phone and never re-installed it. It was a step in the right direction, but it never fixed my underlying bad habits I had gained. The next night I just ended up pulling out my phone again immediately after climbing into bed again, but with no Reddit to scroll, I found myself starting at a new tab for like 3 minutes with no idea what to look at before deciding to open up FiMFiction, and I just ended up replacing my bad Reddit scrolling with reading My Little Pony fanfiction instead (which helped for a while. Hard to understand the words your reading if you're too tired to retain them for more than 2 seconds, so I feel asleep much sooner than I did with Reddit).

That was like, 3 years ago now, and I still haven't curbed my "phone in bed" habit, and have come to despise the way most social media is designed to waste as much of your time as possible. Now I just stick to whatever has a good balance of "respects my time and attention span" (so I'm not stuck on it for hours and hours, and I get an "exit point" eventually), and "provides real social connection" (so I'm actually making friends and engaging communities, not just mindlessly scrolling a fuck ton of reposts without actually interacting). Discord is one of the best value'd social media out there in that way.

I have some of those bad habits, myself. In fact, I've had them since my high school days. That's 20 years of having questionable sleeping habits. I'm trying to curb back on sleeping too late, but sometimes I find myself going to sleep at 8-9am on some days anyways.

Least I'm taking it a little more seriously these days than not taking it seriously at all.

But yeah, I'm of the opinion that Twitter was a mistake. Before Twitter, I was also of the opinion that Tumblr was a mistake. The community those two have cultivated have left me nostalgic for the good ol' messageboard days...

NGL, I gave up trying to sleep at "reasonable times" and just embraced it. If I'm gonna sleep at 4-6 in the morning, then I'll just work night shift (well, when I can. I'm sadly stuck on day shift right now and my sleep is suffering for it because I just don't have the means to get to work and home on night shift times).

Personal crap getting the way of personal projects is always the worst. Good luck with college, and I hope for the best in whatever you're going through!

You say that, yet you're the second most frequent poster to the boards right now! A clear contradiction of the evidence!

I'm just kidding. I have to agree, I just like to post when I have the time :P

My pace kinda slowed down a bit lately, due to... well, me being sick, and dealing with hurricanes nearly back-to-back. In fact, I'm still (kinda) dealing with one right now.

You know what might draw in more people? Posting new rom hacks.

It seems that, without a proper submission system that puts new hacks into the ROM Hacks, many people aren't that interested in posting them to the forums. I suppose that makes sense, so hopefully NinCollin can find the free time to make that feature happen sometime soon!

Maybe we could have in the forum category "Submissions" a subforum for "New Submissions". So people could create posts for their upcoming submissions (and updates) before they submit. It could be a discussion about the submissions itself, rather than the Romhacks. In example if people have certain questions how to do stuff or to organize, specific to this site and their rules.

And the main bar with the links on top of the forum could include a button "Submit", which could link to the "Submissions" subforum. And later if there is a proper submissions system for the database, then the button would link to that place instead.

Well, there is already the Full Releases board, so people can put there new ROM hacks there, and a few have.

I'm honestly not sure why the Submissions category was added, since only the Rejected Submissions board exists, and no one can create threads there (no permissions). Maybe Full Releases could be moved there and renamed like you suggested. Adding a submit button that just brings you to that board would be a decent stop gap though, in any case.

I was thinking of having discussions about the submissions, directly linked like a thread for each submission. Kinda like what the comment section was (or rather is) on old RHDN. At the moment NeoRomhacking.net does not have comments for those entries. In example updates could be discussed in those threads too.

But you are right, this additional board would collide with the the Full Releases board and make it even more confusing probably.

Is it possible to have a link on each submission, that points to a forum post in that board? Each post linked to such an entry could start with "ID WhateverTitle", as in "8788 SMB3 Mario in SMB1 (Hack of Super Mario Bros.)". Just a few random ideas to be honest.

Having a discussion thread for a ROM hack linked directly to its submission in the hacks database would be really cool TBH. Let the OP be the ROM hack description or vice versa.
