Howdy! I'm Autumn, aka Sarah or Scylla Shinespark. I'm a SNES rom hacker and I like sweets. Any pronouns are cool.

I'm curious how RHDN's downloads are staying open, since the former Discord staff (now Romhack.ing) were footing the hosting bill until August 20th. Does this mean Nightcrawler agreed to pay for the hosting? Y'know, again?

Hello. I'm commonly known as Mattrizzle* in this neck of the World Wide Web, but I also go by Matt.

I've been part of the greater ROM hacking community for around two decades, joining Acmlm's Board (a flagship community which was run by the same Acmlm who created the Acmlmboard software that board and this site both run on) in late 2004. Long before disassembling and decompiling games was commonplace (and prior to having that knowledge), I was digging through Super Mario World the old-fashioned way (using a hex editor) finding, testing and documenting ROM offsets to tweak several things in the game, many of which are now part of SMWCentral's ROM Map.

The first release that I was really proud of was my Super Mario Bros. 2 music patch for Super Mario World. Prior to it, DJ Bouché had created a Super Mario Bros. 3 music patch for the same game. I studied his notes and examined the changes the IPS file made to the ROM in order to make my own (he gave me permission to use some of his arrangements). By the time this was released, it was quickly eclipsed by the discovery/release of the first Japanese version of AddMusic. My music patches and Bouché's do not work on modern, accurate SNES emulators because less was known about how the echo effect worked, and ZSNES and Snes9x inaccurately emulated audio.

With all of the new tools (and thus, higher standards) now in place in Super Mario World hacking, I kind of got left in the dust, and began to broaden my horizons to other Super Nintendo games. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, NBA Jam T.E., and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy are a few of these.

When it comes to assisting others, my roles are typically artist and/or assembly coder.
Golden Yoshi's SMW2+2 and eskayelle's NBA Jam 2K21 as well as 2K22 T.E. hacks are showcases of both.

I also contribute to The Cutting Room Floor. When not digging through games to make a ROM hack, it's usually in search of unused content. I probably use "digging" to describe hacking way too often. Sometimes, it's like being a digital "archaeologist". Those who have ever been excited to find some aspect of how a game works after a long deep-dive into a debugger or hex editor will understand.

* It's not pronounced Matt Rizzle. I forgive you if you thought that. The name is one an old friend of mine coined during my teenage years. He unfortunately lost his life to congestive heart failure last year, just a couple of years short of 40 (R.I.P.). Initially the nickname was Mattress (as in the part of a bed, given to me due to my stature resembling a mattress), but he later Snoop-Doggified it by replacing the last syllable with -izzle. It has nothing to do with rizzler or related newfangled words that Gen Alpha is using.

I can related to digging through ROMs in a hex editor for data; I'm the only reverse engineer I know for Arcana (SNES). And I've heard of Golden Yoshi's mods! I'm not very good at Yoshi's Island so I didn't get far, but I also remember a 3rd SMW2+ that was... a SMW mod with RPG elements?

Hey fyi, some of us were using RHDN BBCode to format our mod descriptions. It seems this site is using PHP instead? Is there a way you could automate reformatting those so we don't have broken lists to fix? Anyway, here's an example of what I mean.

You should add Secret of Evermore Gameplay Balance by Ninakoru. Also your list has Secret of Evermore Faster Magic twice, the second one is after SD3.

Also LttP: Quick Commands is listed twice.

Criticism, huh? I had a lot of fun with it, but ah well. It's your list, you should add the ones you're comfortable with after all.

Sometimes when it shows the active usernames online, it'll show someone with a little icon by their name. It doesn't seem to be one of the collectable sprites, but what is it?

Folks on RHDN are releasing news posts on their new updates, just linking off site. So as far as RHDN goes, you'll have to scour the news releases or the forums for new updates.

Cool idea for a topic. Could probably add to this.

Broken pic on the Terranigma hack btw.

A sequel to Mario Adventure sounds badass, and I've heard of SMK DX.

Just finished the main story in Kitsune Tails. It's a really cute, queer retro platformer that's like a cross between Mario 3 and Ganbare Goemon.

RAM is editable memory, it's what the game uses to keep track of the game's current state. Your current number of lives, the level you're on, the items you've collected... those are all tracked by RAM. When the game turns off, RAM is not saved and the game starts from the beginning again. (Save RAM or SRAM, is a special kind that is stored on a battery to avoid data loss.)

In contrast, ROM is not editable. It's the program code that tells the game what to do, it's got the game's graphics and music, it says everything about how the game works.

You can mess with RAM using a cheat device (GameShark etc). For instance, you could give yourself infinite lives while the device is active. You can remove the cheats and the game will play normally for everyone again. On the other hand, messing with the ROM (or ROM hacking) means you're editing the game's code for everybody. A simple example of ROM hacking would be changing "Mario" to say "Wario".

Just looked this game up and it looks adorable. I'll have to keep it in mind when I have money next.

There's a speedrunning scene, too!

Neat! But NGL last time I looked at a game and went "I'm so gonna speedrun that" I found myself in the interesting position of making the main speedrunning Discord server for that game but never actually do any runs because I got bored of the game after I beat it Day 1 lol. Here Comes Niko! is a very good and fun game by the way.

That's a boy? That is a ....very pretty boy oo;;
Very cute game, Animal Crossing vibes. I usually don't get into 3D games but I'll wishlist it for later.
