I've asked about this before in the (former) RHDN discord and forums before, but would anyone be willing to look into making a patch to make Super Mario RPG's menu font behave in the same way that dialogue text does, as a variable width font? I wouldn't think it'd be that difficult, but I'm not honestly versed in that sort of code myself.

I've attached some mock up images to show what it'd look like with a VWF style applied.

My apologies, you are correct that this does fit the description. Looking at the pictures this could definitely use a VWF for the menu.

So far, so very good. The game plays much, much better with VWF applied to the text. What's more, the numbers are left untouched. What do you tend to do with the numbers?

What? These are mockups. There's no patch that does this, this is my asking for a patch to apply this effect.

I...don't believe I have the expertise to apply the VWF.:|

Even if I did have it, then I'm better off translating the Japan only Game Boy game I was working on months ago into English language by myself and nothing more.

What's more, I am amazed how SNES games like Romancing SaGa and Demon Child Zenki: Battle Raiden have English translations that support VWF to save room for longer sentences, aren't you?^_~

I wonder, has anyone attempted decomping SMRPG? If so, maybe they know where the text rendering functions are. You said the game already has a VWF available it uses for cutscenes, so it should be as simple as changing a jump instruction (more or less). Would be harder if no one knows where the font rendering functions actually are, 'cause you'd have to figure it out yourself.

Not sure if that directly has the functions. I get confused looking at this sort of stuff, so I'm not sure myself.
