A game console will often go through a manner of revisions if it enjoyed some success--some which cannot be seen on the surface such as motherboard revisions, and others which change the outward appearance of the system drastically.
Let this be a place where anybody can mention which console revisions are the ones that they personally favor for any number of reasons, such as the outward appearance and aesthetics, feature improvements, changes in system reliability, heat output, fan loudness, pure size differences, and more, and discuss accordingly. Of course, it's not as if the original systems couldn't count for this either. It is all personal preference at the end of the day. They could be home consoles or handhelds; whichever ones you happen to enjoy the most. The world of modding could of course also play a factor, though considering their original feature set might be best in this case. Just as an example, in my case--in terms of home consoles, I really enjoyed the visual change going from the standard look of the original PlayStation to the "PSone" (as it was stylized): The look became a lot more "lite", and I end up thinking of it as a fun "mini" version of the original system--it's hardly larger than the controller, and it even had an optional LCD screen attachment that plugged into the back because of how small the system was, to make it easy to play on something such as a table right in front of you instead of a TV. It might be my most all-around enjoyed revision coming out of a home console so far, though of course, it does get rid of the parallel port on the back similarly to some of the very late-made PlayStation systems. There are quite a few others to mention revisions of as well, such as the Game Boy Advance (AGB-001) which lacked any form of screen lighting, but had the SP version come out not long after with a frontlight (AGS-001), and still later with a proper backlight with the AGS-101. ____________________ YouTube Twitch |

I'm an OG man, I think they're all pretty much superior, except for the DS lite, which was by far the one to get over a regular DS fat.
Never liked the PS1 rev, it was the albino of consoles , it also had the worst looking BIOS. Who used their PlayStation to play CDs? ^^Fat PS2 was the best, agreed, it also used hardware emulation IIRC compared to future revs that went the software route to cut costs. |

My big take in this regard is the AGS-101 being my preferred GBA. I grew up spoiled by backlighting, and as such don't even mind the games that are designed for the lack of it looking less than ideal with it much.
Also, while I've never owned any 3DS other than the 2011 model, I kind of wish I'd waited until at least the XL. |

Posted by Special There's definitely trade-offs with every model, I'd say. I'm not particularly one or the other on the PS2. I like having the extra space and smaller form factor, but the HDD usage is hard to pass up too! But I guess that's why I have both. They're certainly cheap enough to warrant it. Although I do wish it were possible to leverage the actual hardware backwards compatibility while using HDD loading, but nope... You can only play PS1 off an HDD through the lacking POPS emulator. The PS1 CPU (IOP) is busy managing the HDD, so it can't be both a PS1 and manage the HDD at one time. The only way around that would be an optical drive emulator (ODE) for PS2, but that doesn't exist yet. Hoping for an advancement there. But that is getting a little too away from the topic. On another note, there's also the PS2 backwards-compatible fat PS3s, which are the CECHA/B (full hardware BC) and CECHC/E (partial hardware, partial software BC). Those systems are prone to failure on their own, but hugely desirable. Nowadays, the Frankenstein mod exists, where you can have an expert replace the 90nm RSX GPU on the PS3 for you with a more reliable and cooler-running 65nm or 40nm, and you'll be set to properly enjoy that PS2 back-compat, easily and through HDMI to boot. ____________________ YouTube Twitch |

I think it's pretty annoying when a later revision of a system has some nominal improvements, but they cut corners to keep the cost down. For instance, I like the GBA SP's backlight, but the lack of a built-in headphone jack and the worse ergonomics really bring it down for me. |

All of the various colors/styles of the N64 and Game Boy Color are great imo. I grew up with the same purplish see-through GBC my dad had as a kid and I still love the design, both for nostalgia and how it looks.

The super v-power is my favorite (unofficial) snes revision. 128kb of vram x2 > 64kb of vram x1.
Sorry for not posting an official revision but I thought it would be cool to share this here. I designed the pcb and installed it. All 2 chips support 128kb of vram and the 1 chips do not. ____________________ Give someone a fish and you feed them for a day, teach them how to fish and you feed them for life. |

The AGS-101 GBA SP is also my favorite to play any GB title with for the crisp screen and quality backlight, but I have even more bias because it unbound me from the AC adapter by having a rechargeable battery built in! Unofficially - I later customized a GBC to have a backlit IPS screen with customizable filters, adjustable picture, and color overlay included, and that does feel nicer to hold for older GB/C games since it's got more thickness around the controls.
I love my SNES Mini for the really nice picture quality and the fact it fits better in my entertainment stand next to my other consoles. I'm fond of the Dreamcast Rev 1 for the fact it can play homebrew stuff burned to a CD-R. @Slidelljohn That's rad! |

To me it would be the AV Famicom! Love the look of it, and how unlike the NES Toploader that has the “hump” and RF only I love the flat top look of the console. And that it is AV after all.

Here's a worthy mention of a relatively lesser-known hardware revision; the Japanese-exclusive Game Boy Light.
Since its release was so close to the Game Boy Color, it wasn't released outside of Japan, and even shares some parts with it, such as the A and B buttons. It uses an electroluminescent (EL) display as the backlight, which is the same technology as is found in those older "indiglo" watches, though the color on the Light's screens may vary from a teal bluish to a slight green--on Nintendo's official boxes, the screen is more of a green. Cameras tend to give either a blue or green skew to pictures of their screens depending on the white balance because it's so right down the middle. They use 2x AA batteries like the Color, instead of the 2 AAAs of the Pocket. I ended up getting my own just to see what it was like--it's such an intriguing look when you play on them, and it's also extremely comfortable in low light due to not being full white. They use a transflective display, which means they may be viewed in whichever environment, lit or not, and you can separately turn on the system without turning on the backlight, and toggle the light on and off. It is still an original Game Boy at the end of the day, with the limitations inherent to that (being unable to play GBC-exclusive Game Boy games, and quite the slow pixel response time resulting in some motion blurring). But it was the true first backlit screen produced by Nintendo. In terms of handheld game console revisions, this is certainly one of the more interesting ones to me. ____________________ YouTube Twitch |

Ahhh yeah, the GB Light is pretty cool, only found out about that one recently. ____________________ I do requests (reverse-engineering, programming, music, spritework, writing, etc.). I'm always learnin'.

For most of my projects, I worked with barebones consoles (at some point even a Wii).
So this has to be my prefered one: It´s a model 2 clone with region unlock switch and ZIF sockets in all possible chips for the purpose of testing/experimenting. ____________________ https://www.youtube.com/@JoacoRetrotech Mega Man - The Wily Wars (E) SEEPROM++ (https://neoromhacking.net/thread.php?id=62) |

Posted by Slidelljohn Oh, interesting. Is there anything more you can say about it (or is there a project page up somewhere, maybe)? Were you able to avoid the issues with the vertical bar that show up in the official SNES revisions? |

for years i loved my snes jr? not knowing they cut so many corners in it and the whole loss of the sony parts for sound... i had a genesis model 2 not knowing that there was even backwards compatablity in the model 1 for master system games that was missing plus the whole issues of 2 sega cd systems, loved the wii for being basically a souped up gamecube... personally i loved my ps2 slim for having the ethernet built right in instead of the first model needing the brick to add that feature... still have my launch ps4 even tho the hdd has long been switched out for a ssd |

The GBA SP, it can play ANYTHING from GB, GBC, and GBA. Great picture quality, great sound with headphones (yes there's an adapter for it), backlight screen, it's the first handheld from Nintendo with a charger instead of wasting more batteries, Honestly I never needed the brighter version because the screen was lit enough already. It's perfect. ____________________ 8-bit is enough. |

@Kreeblah
There was a project page for it in byuu's forums but those forums no longer exist. It might be saved in the wayback machine. Only the 2 chip snes consoles support this and the others do not. The ppu in the 2 chips support this and byuu had added this to his higan emulator I think around v100. I created the pcb but byuu was the one that said the snes supported the 128kb of video ram. I'm pretty sure this doesn't do anything with the vertical bar but I never looked for that. The chip just adds the extra video ram for the ppu. ____________________ Give someone a fish and you feed them for a day, teach them how to fish and you feed them for life. |

Despite the fact that Nintendo got rid of the 3.5 mm jack from the GBA Sp, I prefer it to the original GBA. I also like the look of the Toploader NES over the original toaster model, I just wish it natively had a RCA connector. I have a Toploader and love it, I just don't have the skills to mod it though lol. Other than that I prefer the look of many of the original models of consoles, especially the Sega Genesis, PS2, and PS3. Their later revisions just don't look as cool IMO, and the Model 2 Genesis got rid of my favorite feature of the Model 1, the headphone jack. |
