Two weeks ago I posted the Essential NES ROM hacks list on Reddit. Today it's time to give the Super Nintendo some well deserved love!

These are the Essential SNES ROM hacks to play. This list includes the best ROM hacks the community has created for Nintendo's classic super console!

Suggestions? Feel free to post them in the comments, but please keep it friendly! :-)

Find the list... here!

IMO you should post it here and not just a link to reddit.

But yeah, you seem to do these lists yearly and I always look forward to finding a few gems from them. Thanks for doing them. :P

Looks like a pretty nice selection of stuff! Maybe this one's too oddball for the list, but probably the nearest and dearest SNES hack to my heart is Super Metroid Arcade, which I played a lot when it was new. Guess there was just something about a Metroid experience without having to chow down on a whole defined world again this time around that really clicked with me--just dabblings of each vanilla room thrown at me here and there.

I'd like to put in a little suggestion for a personal strong favorite of mine...

That'd be Mario & Luigi: Kola Kingdom Quest, by Gamma V.

As someone who loves Super Mario World hacks but doesn't like absurd "you had better be using save states" difficulty, or just overtuned difficulty in general, it's an excellent balance of "standard Nintendo-like" difficulty. It starts about as easy as any Mario game does, or perhaps a bit easier, but gets harder at a similar-enough rate to them, without going too overboard.

Secrets are scattered about smartly with some new mechanics as well, such as collecting all the big coins in a level causing a key to spawn, and more of the capabilities of the SNES are shown vs Super Mario World. It feels almost as though it could have been an official expansion pack for the original game made by Nintendo themselves, which is a quality I appreciate a lot in a hack. You could play it on an actual SNES, and not feel like you're getting a worse experience out of it.

At any rate, that's just what hack came to mind the most. Kind of gave me those warm feelings like I was experiencing SMW for the first time again.

Also, +1 recommendation for Super Metroid Redux. You don't even need the Heavy Physics patch that tries to make it more like Zero Mission. If you go without it, you can still feel a huge improvement in Samus' responsiveness when moving her. Still floaty, but significantly more controllable. The ability to remap the buttons to Fusion and Zero Mission's control layout is also great--no more need to hold down a button just to run, and quick-swapping between your beam and missiles/super missiles is as easy as selecting which one you want with Select and holding down R to toggle between your beam and missiles; no more slowly cycling through your secondary weapons with Select or Y.

The map is also improved massively, with the ability to show you that you've gotten all the items on a particular screen just like the later games (unfilled circle for items still on that square of map, and dot for all items gotten), and it will even track the original colors of the doors you've found. Some of these features do require you to enter the pause menu to see, though.

I agree with your point, but it's caused by how the internet works these days. If I want this list to get any visibility I need to draw people to the Reddit post in the first 48 hours. Putting in all this work, only to see it immediately buried by the algorithm would be a shame.

Well if you posted this stuff here, RHDN, and reddit, you'd get appreciated from the respective communities, it's not a waste of your time... But it's kinda silly to have RHDN users go to reddit then back to RHDN for the links lol. ( karma points mean jack dude ;))

On a side note about RHDN links, there's a very good chance that come Aug 20th, every one of those links is going to need replacing as downloads will most likely not be working then.

Agree about the silliness. :eyeshift:. After the first weeks are gone, I'll be posting the complete list over here too. Maybe it can be a pinned post for a while. Or maybe it can be added to a special "featured" page?

About the breaking RHDN links. That's why I created downloads on my own website for now: https://www.okimpala.net/essential-snes-rom-hacks-of-all-time

I guess after the 20th I will change the links to NeoRomhacking.net :)

Well in a couple of weeks I'm sure we'll have a new front page with a "News" section, seems like a good way to test part out. :)

Pretty much everything Gamma V makes is great. I wish more SMW hackers could be like her.

I'm also surprised that SMW2+3: The Essence Star wasn't on the list.

You should add Secret of Evermore Gameplay Balance by Ninakoru. Also your list has Secret of Evermore Faster Magic twice, the second one is after SD3.

Also LttP: Quick Commands is listed twice.

I think you mean the list on my website? I think you just visited when I was editing my website. Should be ok now.

As for the balancing patch for SOE. I looked at it before, but there was a lot of criticism on that hack, so I found it hard to add it to an "essential" list.

Criticism, huh? I had a lot of fun with it, but ah well. It's your list, you should add the ones you're comfortable with after all.

It might be worth adding the SA-1 hacks for various games. It's really nice having some of these run without slowdown.

MSU-1 hack for The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II, A Link To The Past, and Link's Awakening. While those games already had great music in them, hearing orchestral versions play throughout them makes them feel like brand new while also giving me that big epic quest vibe that fits the Zelda series so well. ^_^

The Legend of Zelda: Parallel Worlds is a cool hack of The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. It's one of those Zelda hacks where you need to survive until you get a weapon. It's a nice long hack that is a complete adventure. It even has different levels of difficulty in different patches.

Super Mario Kart has a Spongebob version that has unique tracks as well as unique racers. It's all Spongebob characters and they all represent them well enough. All the tracks are from the show too. There's even an MSU-1 version that plays Spongebob music in it. The rom hack is called "Super Spongebob Kart."

All 3 Mega Man X games have Zero hacks so I would consider those essential.

Also I just remembered one of my favorite hacks from way back when, "Mario is MIssing Done Right" for Super Nintendo. It's a rom hack of Super Mario World or Super Mario All Stars, I can't remember which one. What I can remember is you played as Luigi and played through levels with music from different Mario games similar to Super Mario Bros. 3-Mix on the NES.

Honestly, I do like a lot of Gamma V's hacks, with the most recent one I've played being Super Luigi Land. I could only wish I was only a fraction of how good she is at her craft. I'd like to think I'm semi-ok at judging levels (been going through VLDC entries since VLDC12), but not so much at designing levels myself, haha.

I also heard Gamma is also currently at work on Super Luigi Land 2. Can't wait for that one.

Mario is Missing Done Right was an SMW rom hack; I can spin jump with Luigi in that game.
I have it on my computer with all levels beaten & all 3 save slots completed

One that's used at the office on a daily basis is Mattrizzle and eskayelle's 2K22 edition of NBA Jam TE. My boss, who's nearing 70, cannot get away from getting a game out of me once daily in the afternoon on the SNES Classic before I head home from the job. He's not much of a gamer, but he sure appreciates the modern day aspect of an otherwise old game nonetheless with the roster updates and the engine optimizations.

I'm really hoping there's another update at some point, that said.
