Last view: 6 hours 		wasn't the point of the nes top loader not only to be a revision to hardware but also to change how the system itself was since the old gray box itself had many people and even myself was guilty of this but we put our sodas or glasses full of liquids to rest and some would spill into there system and wreck it, that and when they released that top loader it was a last ditch effort to keep the nes alive since the snes was going strong and nintendo wanted to attempt to stop the unlicensed games that started to really flood the market including the game genie that so many loved back then...

Last view: 1 day 		I always thought the reason for the “hump” on the top loader, was more to avoid the use of the Famicom Disk System Adaptor from anyone who somehow would manage to get it to work on the Top loader. But than again there was the difference in pins, so I guess even it the top loader was flat it wouldn’t have mattered. Since the adaptor would have sat high even with a FC to NES converter.

Also there was a way to get better picture out of the top loader without any mods on a crt, it did require the use of a VCR. Tried it myself few years back and it was nice getting a better picture and less noticeable jail bars.

Last view: 4 hours 		The NA NES top loader also did have some very few limited versions which used the Nintendo AV Multi-Out cable, but this was specifically limited to units where people sent the consoles to Nintendo complaining about bad video quality over RF.

They likely simply swapped over some of the AV Famicom's back parts. Either way, these are basically unicorns since they're absurdly rare.

Agreed 1000%. Not to mention, the original GBA felt very clunky, at least for my hands. It also wasn't good to carry around, either, and that's not even mentioning the lighting issues that came with it, forcing you to have a lighting accessory on you.

I also had the same gripes with the original DS, as well, though the original DS model solved the lighting issues the OG GBA model had.

Probably the revision to the PS3 if only for the fact that the old fat was largely prone to overheat failures. Those old GT 7800 90mm's were notorious for failures and ran hot. I've got a PS3 fat that I saved, dropped firmware on, re-greased and everything and it's one of those I have to run with the fans at about half because of just how hot it gets...except in my case it's the CPU that's got runaway heat. It really is one of those that qualify for de-lidding but I'm afraid of breaking it so I just run it under 75C before the fans really kick in and pray for the best. It mostly accomplishes this so long as I don't do PS2 emulation. Once I do that, then it really starts to kick in.

Plus side is if I need that I have a PS2 slim that I have modded that I could just do with instead through ethernet. Not the fastest ethernet, granted, but it does the job better than USB 1.1 on the front for front-loading a bunch of ISOs.

Mine burnt out just playing and completing Kingdom Hearts 2.

I'll believe it. Those running standard fans wouldn't kick those on until about 90C. I found that out when I played The Last of Us in a heavy area and saw my fans kick on full throttle for the first time before I placed CFW on it. Come to find out, it was near meltdown when it happened. Thankfully, I had some sense to save, turn it off, and let it cool down so it didn't do that.

Years later, when I took it apart, I took a look at the CPU die itself and the label for it and the RSX had pretty much melted off over time. It didn't melt the die cover itself completely but enough to fade the text all the way.

Last view: 4 hours 		The SYSCON (stock) fan settings for the PS3 (any model) were absurdly, unreasonably conservative. They prioritized having the fan be as quiet as possible over the system's actual health so much to the point it honestly killed and still kills PS3s, mainly the original fat models that still had an incorrect underfill for the RSX (long video warning).

That all said, I personally would still look for a backwards compatible fat as my potential forever console as long as it's been "Frankenstein modded" to have the smaller-size, less-heat, more-reliable 40nm RSX. I completely understand their decision in removing such a huge component and advertised feature of the PS3 to drastically cut costs and course-correct with how unpopular (and unaffordable) the PS3 was at the time, but that doesn't mean I have to like the feature removal. Plus with CFW you can adjust the fan speed curve to a more actually sane one for longevity.

I currently have just a CECH-2001A Slim, which isn't even really the best Slim since it has a 65nm RSX instead of the 40nm, so it runs quite hot. More hot than my fully decked out desktop PC that I built myself running at full bore.

I haven't delved too deeply into that modding market but is it even possible to convert a 4-USB fat model's RSX to a more modern 40mm without botching everything in the process?
