While I'm not a romhacker by trade and only dabbled with aspects of it, my prime motivation could be summed up as correcting what I perceive as poor game design. For instance, I find unreasonable encounter rates in RPGs to be infuriating.
I was actually working on patches to reduce them in Metal Max Returns (SNES) and had some interesting findings, but sadly lost my notes. |

Pretty simple: I like level design, and doing level design for old games that don't have an official level editor happens to be romhacking.
Though nowadays it's just because I know my way around consoles due to homebrew development, and I'll happily take opportunities to spend an hour in Mesen to make a game more fun or allow more people to enjoy it. Sometimes rebalancing a little bit makes a huge impact on how fun a game is. |

I've known about romhacks since my elementary school days, but never really considered getting into doing it until my teen years. I got my start in producing full releases with my dumb meme hacks of Metroid games, with finding hex tweaks and related research on the side. This gave me some skills to apply to RE-ing the PMD WiiWare games, which led me to being informed of Specialagentape's translation project that was being kept secret until release, and me being able to apply some finishing touches to that. When Ape showed me what he was doing to Donkey Kong Land a year later, I got inspired to tackle something of that caliber, with a few smaller-scale colorizations before the much longer effort on Kirby's Dream Land 2.
I guess my main drive was the prospect of making things people would truly enjoy, as growing up I felt like my creative talents in my personal life were much ridiculed. As such, the path into romhacking helped me deal with such old baggage. |

Wanted to play FF3 over the internet with a friend, so took a look and changed how it reads keypresses to make it possible. |
