This is absolutely horrible! Android is supposed to be completely open-source, and now Google is trying to make that exceedingly difficult without Advertising! We all need to revolt together and force Google to abandon their plans or Emulation as we know it will likely be completely dead as people will use them less and less because they will cost money or have advertising that will shoo people away! Google is violating various US Constitutional Amendments and even UN Articles, and they think it's perfectly legal, we know the EU will try their hardest to prevent it, but we need every country to make laws preventing Google from doing this very act, if you have an Android: DISABLE YOUR GOOGLE PLAY SERVICES APP IMMEDIATELY!!! I can't stress this enough, if you disable the bugger, and disable updates using Developer Settings, you should be able to dodge this mandate, it will render your device vulnerable, but having the Freedom of Choice is far more important. I'm already scheduling to disable Google Play Services so I can freely download and install apps I like and save precious money for other purposes, and you all should consider that possibility too, breaking off of Google is strongly recommended now, worse still, it might even affect other Android OS systems like GrapheneOS, rendering it hopeless too, it's absolute chaos on the Android scene, and RetroArch will likely suffer heavily because of it as many Android gamers use RetroArch, so this has very negative implications on Android's gaming future and for general preservation! ____________________ My love for Arceus is eternal. You know, it's funny how straight-forward they are by saying "it's like checking ID at the airport." I think they want to make it impossible to create and distribute apps that they or their partners don't like, e.g. apps that circumvent Google ads or humanitarian resources that enrage not-so-humanitarian regimes. It also seems to be an attempt to circumvent right-to-repair by making it harder to root your phone or install custom ROMs which would give access back to your choice of third-party app host. I don't think it's truly about malware, because we already have third-party apps blocked by default. Android warns you it's an APK from an unknown source and it could hurt you, and makes you enable installing it, which is pretty hard to do accidentally.
That said, I think most emulators should be fine. Almost all of them use handwritten code and nothing proprietary. Google Play already hosts some. I assume most of those developers aren't gonna have a problem with package signing or authenticating themselves, because no one of consequence is going to have an objection with their work existing. Corporations lost the battle over emulators long ago. I did disable Play Services out of principle though, because I completely agree it reeks of overreach. I don't use anything that relies on it anymore, and will be using alternative APK sources from now on. I paid for the phone, and shouldn't be able to do any less with it than I could when I bought it. |
