Description |
This hack replaces a few insensitive caricatures in enemy and building sprites in Makai Island, primarily on Cook Island (the first one).
Those original Higemaru (JP version) sprites were cartoonishly racist ("Little Black Sambo" stereotypes, Kalahari Bushmen), and while a couple sprites were improved in the 'Makai Island' prototype version later made available, several elements were left as they are (Moai statues, totem poles), which have also been updated in this hack. The new sprites have been carefully edited to maintain the visual style and detail Capcom games of the era are known for.
Here is a preview image that shows all the changes: https://i.imgur.com/mDRj2H7.png. The only other change is the correction of the name of Cook Island also included in many other patches.
There are two versions of this patch:
- a patch for the JP version (based on No-Intro Higemaru), which also works on any patched JP versions (such as Snark's EN translation).
- a patch for the "Makai Island Proto" version (based on No-Intro Proto), which also works on any patched Proto versions (such as SCD's Makai Restoration hack.)
These patches should work on any version you find even if it doesn't match the below CRCs, as long as you use the patch that matches it.
You can tell the patch has been applied if the title screen's anchor cursor is flipped to point up-right.
This hack was requested by several people, partially to make the game stream-safe. If you do not like that it exists, you can always play the Restoration version found here: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1102/. |
