Game Description |
Known as Avatar Tuner in Japan, Digital Devil Saga is a two-part spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei series for the PlayStation 2.
The game is built on the same engine as Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne, and features returning mechanics such as the Press Turn system. However, the game's overall structure is more similar to standard jRPGs. Instead of recruiting and summoning an army of demons, you control a cast of human characters who transform into demons, and devour their foes to gain more abilities.
The first game of the series places you in control of the Embyron, a tribe fighting a never-ending war in a dreary, blasted wasteland known as the Junkyard. The sudden arrival of an alien object awakens everyone in the Junkyard not only to their demonic alter egos, but to new emotions and knowledge about the world they live in.
A key gameplay feature is the ability to learn new skills through "Mantras", which can be purchased and equipped at save points. Devouring enemies will grant you "Atma points" that can be used to advance your current Mantra, and mastering a Mantra will allow you to permanently learn its associated skills. Mastering Mantra unlocks more advanced Mantra in skill tree-like fashion.
